However, during World War II, the event occurred, which was known as the Battle of Los Angeles. Five civilians were killed in this battle. Read more about this incident at layes.info.

How events unfolded

The Battle of Los Angeles is the incident that occurred on the night of February 24-25, 1942, in Los Angeles. The United States of America entered the Second World War at the end of 1941. This happened after the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Imperial Japanese Navy.

An air raid alert was activated in Los Angeles County on February 24-25. A total blackout was ordered. In the meantime, thousands of air surveillance officers were sent to their positions. The coastal artillery fired over 1,400 rounds. Pilots were on full alert. The artillery worked for almost an hour. A few hours later, it was announced that there was no threat and the blackout was lifted.

As a result, several buildings were damaged by shell shrapnels. However, the most terrifying thing was that five civilians were killed.

Undoubtedly, this situation caused a stir in the press. A few hours after the event, the Secretary of the Navy announced that it was a false alarm. There was an assumption that private planes, which were used to spread panic among the population, could have triggered the air alert.

What the press wrote

Newspapers could not ignore this situation and made up their own versions. For example, the Los Angeles Times published a photo the day after the incident, depicting an alien ship. However, the image was heavily retouched.

Several media outlets also suspected the government of concealing facts and censoring information on this subject.

The United States of America in World War II

The escalating tensions began in Europe in 1937 when Germany, Italy and Japan formed a military alliance. During this period, US President Roosevelt called for the use of economic pressure on aggressor countries and their international isolation. In 1941, the Lend-Lease Act was initiated (supply of equipment, ammunition and food to allies). The Lend-Lease was initially intended for Great Britain but later extended to the Soviet Union.

In December 1941, Japanese planes attacked the American base at Pearl Harbor. In that attack, over 2,400 people were killed. Four battleships, two cruisers and one minelayer were sunk. American warships began open-ocean warfare against Japan. Franklin Roosevelt declared war on Japan. Within a few days, Germany, Italy, Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary proclaimed war on the United States.

It should be noted that the United States lost 418,000 Americans in World War II. In total, 61 countries fought in this war with over 110 million soldiers. As for losses, it has been reported by different sources that between 50 and 75 million people died in World War II.

War is pain, sorrow, tears and death. Americans are a happy people because military operations, missiles and destruction pass us by. Our children are unaware of what an air-raid alert, a bomb shelter or a survival kit are. We hope our article was informative for you and that you have drawn appropriate conclusions, and such “battles” will only stay in the history of our city.

War is the worst thing that can happen in the life of a country.
