Here are some important points in this context:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Since Eric Garcetti, the incumbent mayor at the time, could not be re-elected for a third term, 20 candidates ran for his seat. The top three leaders were: Karen Bass (43.11% of the votes), Rick Caruso (35.99%) and Kevin de Leon (7.79%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All 15 out of 15 seats in the Los Angeles City Council were re-elected<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>District attorneys, sheriffs, judges and other officials stood for election. The interesting fact is that Mike Feuer (city attorney from 2013 to 2022) and Ron Galperin (city controller from 2013 to 2022) ran for the positions of mayor and state attorney in California.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is worth adding that municipal elections in California are officially non-partisan, meaning the party affiliation of candidates is not indicated on the ballot. With such an approach, voters focus on the candidates\u2019 qualifications and experience rather than their party membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is theoretically a good move, but in real practice, candidates try to show that they belong to a certain party in every possible way. Their campaign platforms reflect this affiliation. Voters chose between Karen Bass and Rick Caruso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It should be noted that turnout in the runoff was significantly lower than in the first ballot. The results of voter surveys slightly clarified the situation, as some residents of the city were not interested in the elections and, therefore, did not come to cast their votes. There were also people who did not believe that their vote would make any difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karen Bass won, receiving 53% of the votes, while her opponent polled 47%. Bass, the 43rd mayor of the city, became the first African-American woman elected as mayor of Los Angeles. This is an important historical moment. She is known to be a member of the Democratic Party and has represented California&#8217;s 37th district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karen&#8217;s opponent was a millionaire businessman, Rick Caruso. The new mayor and city council immediately confronted the city&#8217;s current issues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Homelessness. To tackle this problem, there are such possible solutions as increasing the number of affordable housing, focusing on social welfare programs, and investing in psychological and social services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Criminality. The authorities propose to increase the number of police officers and invest in crime prevention programs to lower the city\u2019s crime rate. There is another possible solution, which involves the reforming of criminal justice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High cost of housing. To address this issue, the government suggests regulating rental payment and landlords, building more affordable dwellings and promoting accessible transportation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Climate change.
