As a result, about 40,000 residents of Hiroshima died instantly.

On August 9, 1945, America dropped the atomic bomb “Fat Man” on the Japanese city of Nagasaki, killing 60,000 residents that day. By December of the same year, due to wounds and diseases caused by radiation, approximately half a million people died in both cities.

These actions shocked the country and its government to such an extent that they compelled Emperor Hirohito to order the Supreme War Council to accept the Allies’ terms. They were laid out in the Potsdam Declaration to end the war.

Experts still discuss the moral aspects of this event, which are subject to academic and political debates. On one hand, the atomic bombs helped end the war, saving lives that would have been lost through a land invasion. On the other hand, half a million innocent people who had no connection to the war were killed. Additionally, the atomic bombings also impacted ecology and medicine, leading to long-term consequences in these areas.

The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki serve as a lesson to humanity about why such scenarios should not happen again and is a reminder of the tragedies behind them.

Victory over Japan Day

Japan surrendered on August 14, 1945, and since then, August 14 and 15 have been known as V-J Day or Victory over Japan Day. Interestingly, September 2, 1945, is also considered a day of victory, as it marked the official surrender of Japan aboard the USS Missouri. It was anchored in Tokyo Bay.

Officials took part in the capitulation ceremony, which lasted about 30 minutes. During this time, a chaplain of the US Navy said a prayer, followed by the playing of the national anthem. The event was accompanied by singing. Then hundreds of American carrier and land-based aircraft flew over the Missouri.

Delegates from other allied countries, including China, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and others, witnessed this ceremony.

Japanese reaction

Some soldiers between August 15 and 16, 1945, were so shocked and devastated by the news of the surrender that they could not bear it. Representatives of the Imperial Japanese Army killed many Australian and British captives.

On September 15, 1945, orders were found to execute over 2000 prisoners of war and civilian internees. The main event was a parade on Hollywood Boulevard, which was joined by many people. For example, you can find a picture of the celebration of V-J Day in Hollywood, which is kept in the collection of photographs in the Los Angeles Public Library. The photo shows a group of young people marching down Hollywood Boulevard, with one man carrying a small drum. In other photos, the couples are kissing, laughing and expressing joy. At the parade, there were not only civilians but also military servants, veterans and representatives of various ethnic groups.

Free concerts featuring famous singers and musicians of that time were organized.

Parties were held in restaurants and clubs, where people sang and danced, celebrating the victory.

The evening sky over Hollywood was lit up with colorful fireworks in honor of the victory celebration.

Victory over Japan Day in the USA is celebrated on September 2 (since 1948). However, the holiday began to fade slowly. One of the reasons is economic character, as workers received a paid day off. For example, in Moosup (a renamed town of Plainfield, Connecticut), a parade for Victory Day is held every year. This parade is the oldest parade that has taken place without any interruption since Japan’s surrender in 1945.

Unofficial celebration

There were also many ways of informal celebration at that time:

neighbors and friends gathered on the streets on Victory Day to have a chat and rejoice

people raised a glass of champagne (or other drinks) to celebrate the victory

Americans decorated their houses with flags and other festive attributes.

All this just emphasizes how emotional this event was. The commemoration of Victory over Japan Day in 1945 is an important part of Hollywood. This day symbolizes unity and faith in a better future.

It is worth mentioning that, at the same time, this day was particularly sad in light of the devastating war. Overall, over 400,000 Americans and over 65 million people worldwide died in the war.

It is relevant to note that following World War II, the United States and Japan mended their relations and formed the U.S.-Japan Alliance. They share common goals in the Indo-Pacific region. These goals include freedom of navigation and economic prosperity (within the norms of international law), as well as deterring aggression from Russia, China, North Korea and other terrorist organizations.

Victory over Japan became one of the most milestone events in Hollywood history.
