When she was six, her family moved to Louisiana, where she spent her childhood. Growing up between two cultures profoundly shaped her worldview. Raman has often emphasized that her family’s immigrant experience helped her better understand social issues, systemic inequality, and the critical need for effective local government. At 22, Nithya Raman officially became a U.S. citizen.

In 2003, Raman graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor’s degree in Social Studies. She then attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), earning a master’s degree in Urban Planning. Her time at MIT defined her career path. From then on, she focused on urban planning, transportation infrastructure, community development, and finding efficient models for managing large metropolises.

After completing her studies, Nithya spent some time living in India. There, she founded Transparent Chennai, a research organization dedicated to analyzing urban infrastructure and helping local governments improve sanitation systems. The project became a prime example of collaboration between academics, activists, and municipalities. The team gathered open data, studied living conditions, and proposed concrete solutions to enhance the urban environment.

In 2013, Raman moved to Los Angeles. She took a job in the City Administrative Officer’s department, getting a firsthand look at how one of the largest cities in the U.S. is managed. It was there that she realized the sheer scale of the housing crisis and the severe shortage of affordable homes. Shortly after, she decided to transition from administrative work to grassroots activism.

SELAH Neighborhood Homeless Coalition

In 2017, Raman founded the SELAH Neighborhood Homeless Coalition, a community organization dedicated to helping unhoused individuals. This extensive background in community organizing ultimately became a cornerstone of her campaign for the Los Angeles City Council.

Political Career

In 2019, Nithya Raman announced her run for the Los Angeles City Council to represent the city’s 4th District. Her campaign quickly became a masterclass in grassroots mobilization. Thousands of volunteers hosted meet-and-greets, knocked on doors, and actively spread the word about the candidate’s platform.

Her campaign was built around several key pillars:

expanding affordable housing;

reforming approaches to tackling homelessness;

improving public transportation;

fighting climate change;

increasing transparency in city government.

This platform quickly gained massive traction among progressive voters, community organizations, and young people.

The 2020 primaries posed Raman’s first major test. She ran against incumbent Councilmember David Ryu and screenwriter Sarah Kate Levy. Following the first round, Raman and Ryu advanced to a runoff. In November 2020, Nithya Raman secured a decisive victory, winning the majority of votes in the 4th District. For L.A. politics, this was a watershed moment. It was the first time in 17 years that a sitting city councilmember lost to a challenger who had never held elected office. American media dubbed the win one of the year’s biggest political surprises, while the Los Angeles Times described it as a “political earthquake.” Raman’s victory highlighted a growing demand for politicians who prioritize community development, affordable housing, municipal reform, and greater civic engagement.

2024 Re-election

During the 2024 election cycle, Nithya Raman ran for a second term. Her main opponent was Deputy City Attorney Ethan Weaver. The race unfolded amid fierce political debate. Segments of the business community, certain property owner associations, as well as police and fire unions, threw their support behind Raman’s rival. Despite this opposition, she maintained a strong base of support among her district’s constituents.

Ultimately, Raman secured over 50% of the vote in the primary. This allowed her to avoid a runoff and outright secure her re-election to the Los Angeles City Council. The result proved that her political agenda continues to resonate deeply with a significant portion of the 4th District’s residents.

Work on the Los Angeles City Council

Upon taking office, Nithya Raman focused on the core issues of her campaign platform. Housing policy became one of her top priorities. Raman also placed a strong emphasis on government transparency. She championed participatory budgeting mechanisms that allow residents to directly allocate portions of city funds and have a say in local decision-making.

One of her first legislative achievements was amending the city’s tenant anti-harassment ordinance. She proposed broadening the legal definition of tenant harassment to include aggressive “cash-for-keys” buyout offers and threats to file false reports with law enforcement. Additionally, the amendments introduced stricter penalties for landlords who violate the rules. In June 2021, the City Council officially approved these changes.

Nithya Raman has also been a visible presence at social justice rallies.
