Farewell ceremony
First and foremost, we’d like to tell how Eric Garcetti resigned from his position and Karen Bass became his successor. She became the first African-American woman to hold the position of Mayor of Los Angeles. The position was officially accepted on Monday (December 12, 2022, at 12:01).
You can find out more about Eric Garcetti’s farewell and see him thanking the townspeople in the video below.
The homelessness crisis in California
During his 2013 mayoral campaign, Eric Garcetti focused on dealing with chronic homelessness. Following his election, he stated that under his leadership, the level of crime and violence would not increase. He also promised to focus on economic growth and bring the film and television industry back to Hollywood.
After his victory and re-election in 2017, the mayor of Los Angeles expressed his ambition to bring the Olympic Games back to the city. He didn’t deny though that the city was still dealing with crime and homelessness.
This issue also directly affects the Greater Los Angeles region. Eric Garcetti identified this issue as one of the most serious. Furthermore, the coronavirus pandemic has worsened the situation, with thousands of people losing their jobs and some being evicted.
One of the resolutions signed by the 42nd Mayor of Los Angeles prohibited the placement of camps on sidewalks, entrances, overpasses and exits. According to the directive, homeless camps could not be placed near parks, libraries, schools or shelters. People who spent the night on the streets in non-designated areas wouldn’t be arrested but fined. In addition, law police had to inform homeless people two weeks in advance, and law enforcement officials had to offer shelter.

Sexual harassment scandals
Another unpleasant problem afflicted the administration of the city’s 42nd mayor. It dealt with allegations of sexual harassment. Particularly, a case involving one of the senior advisors (Rick Jacobs), which resulted in the withdrawal of Eric Garcetti’s appointment as US ambassador to India in the spring of 2021. At the same time, US Republican senators from Iowa (Joni Ernst and Chuck Grassley) demanded specific information from the mayor on how Eric Garcetti dealt with sexual harassment allegations against his employees.
According to the charges, the harassment occurred in front of the mayor, who did nothing to stop it.
LGBTQ community
In March 2020, a large interview was released in which Mayor Eric Garcetti answered important questions about the fight against the coronavirus epidemic and the situation with the LGBTQ community. The man stated that he has been a strong ally of this movement for decades. It is worth noting that in 2019, under his leadership, Los Angeles became the largest municipality to formally incorporate LGBTQ businesses in its contracts. It is important to note the specific figures provided by the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce. As a matter of fact, such businesses contribute 1.7 trillion dollars to the US economy and generate $2.48 million in income. The companies create more than 33,000 jobs.
In terms of the fight against the epidemic, Eric Garcetti stated that the city administration was doing everything it could to assist people, including collaborating closely with state and federal partners to ensure community safety and awareness.
The mayor of the city expressed pride in the administration’s reaction to the outbreak. We are talking about organizing meals for the elderly and establishing one of the largest testing and vaccination centers.

Thanksgiving Day
Traditionally, on Thanksgiving morning, Eric Garcetti joined volunteers and staff to prepare and distribute meals to seriously ill people and those without housing.
A new chapter in life
Eric Garcetti was sworn in as the youngest mayor of Los Angeles in a century. During his time in office, he experienced both major victories as well as many problems. We are talking about homelessness, sex scandals, conflicts with the police and activist trade unions. The greatest challenge was the coronavirus epidemic, which effectively shut down the city for an extended period of time.
After saying his goodbyes, Eric Garcetti moved on to the next chapter in his life. He remained optimistic, believing that he would be able to become the country’s ambassador to India. Finally, he stated that this is the most tough, but also the best, job he has ever had. He loves the city of Los Angeles and has worked tirelessly to ensure its prosperity. He is certain that his successor will work in the same direction.
