How the metropolis was born

In the 16th century, the Tongva and Chumash Indians lived in the coastal areas of modern Los Angeles. But the first Europeans who set foot on the land of the future metropolis were sailors. They sailed on two ships in 1542. The Europeans landed in San Diego Bay.

After 227 years, the next expedition led by Gaspar de Portola landed on the shore. Missionary Juan Crespi also participated in the expedition, who noted that the area was suitable for settlement. Already in 1771, a mission named after the Archangel Gabriel was founded at this place. During this period, there were 30 settlements of Tongva Indians on the territory of the future city, and three thousand people lived there. Ten years later, a village was founded here, which was named the Village of the Virgin Mary. At first it was a small town, but by 1820 it had become the largest secular settlement in California. 650 people lived here.

Further development of the city

Mexico declared its independence and Los Angeles was even part of it for a while. However, everything changed after the American-Mexican War, where Mexico was defeated. Los Angeles changed its nationality and passed to the United States of America in 1848. Two years later, Los Angeles officially became a city.

In 1876 a railroad was built to Los Angeles. Growing oranges became the basis of the local economy. In forty years, the number of residents increased from two to one hundred thousand.

In 1892, oil deposits were found in the city, and for a long time Los Angeles accounted for 25% of world production. The city continues to develop. In 1913, the construction of the Aqueduct was completed, providing water to the local population. Seven years later, the aviation industry and the film industry began to develop. In 1932, the tenth Summer Olympic Games were held in Los Angeles.

After the Second World War, the construction of transport interchanges, buildings and skyscrapers began.

Modern period

Los Angeles is not only the second most populous city in the country. It is also the largest industrial center of the United States of America. International trade, film industry, military, aerospace, oil refining, electrical engineering, food industry, etc. are actively developing in the city. Medicine, tourism and the entertainment industry also belong to the main industrial sectors.

In addition to that, Los Angeles is considered to be the most automobile city in the world. Accordingly, the city of Angels has constant traffic jams. Motorists spend about 63 hours a year standing in traffic jams. But there are also many pedestrians in the city, because sometimes it will be faster to reach the destination on foot than to go by car.

It should be added that the metropolis has a record number of airports: six commercial and several small airfields of small aircraft. By the way, the city’s main airport was ranked within the top ten largest airports in the world.

As for the railway, only one train station operates in Los Angeles. It was built in 1939. Railway connection is not very popular with Americans. That is all because train ticket prices often cost the same as a flight ticket.
