The Cold War: Los Angeles Air Battle

War is the most terrible tragedy that can happen to a country. After all, it follows death, destruction, despair, tears and degradation. Fortunately, there were no significant military actions occurring in Los Angeles. However, the residents of the metropolis are well aware of the consequences of destruction, fires, protests, uprisings and martial law. Today we will discuss the incident that happened in the aerial dimension above Los Angeles. Read more about this on the layes.info website with reference to bbc.com.

The Battle of Palmdale. Sequence of events

Fascist Germany was defeated by the end of the Second World War. In this war, our country lost about 418 thousand Americans. In 1956, another incident arose that caused concern among the population of Los Angeles. Fighter aicrafts were deployed into the sky. People started seeking shelter as missiles rained down on the ground. The US Command determined that the Soviet Union had breached the air boundaries of the country. It should be noted that, during that period, the two influential states were in the Cold War.

However, the reality was different. On August 16, 1956, an F6F VF took off from a Naval Air Station in California. It was converted into an unmanned aerial vehicle. The aircraft had to become a target for missile testing, thus the drone was painted red. According to the plan, the aircraft was meant to fly across the Pacific Ocean and be intentionally shot down over a waterbody. The drone stopped responding to commands at some point and headed toward LA. It is clear that there was a risk of a disaster if the aircraft were to fall in a populated area and result in human casualties.

As a result, two fighters were dispatched into the sky.

A challenging situation in the airspace of Los Angeles: 208 missiles were fired

But knocking down the drone was not so easy. The F-89D Scorpions could do it because they were equipped with unguided rockets. But first, it was essential to hit right on the target, which turned out to be a difficult task. In addition, the automatic missile launch system malfunctioned, and the pilots had to switch to manual control. The rockets were launched one after the other, yet the drone remained within the airspace of Los Angeles. 208 missiles were fired at the red vehicle and all missed the target. The drone was approaching the metropolis, creating a critical situation. But it ran out of fuel and ultimately crashed near Palmdale. Luckily, no one was hurt, just the electric cables were damaged.

However, two fighters that fired more than two hundred missiles caused damage to L.A. County. A fire spanning 140 hectares was caused by the bombardment, and hundreds of firefighters tried to extinguish it. There were also smashed windows in the houses and shattered cars. It should be added that some missiles malfunctioned and did not explode, thus preventing fatalities.

Actually, there have been numerous similar instances. For example, in the 70s of the last century, a fighter aircraft was about to fall in Montana. The pilot ejected. The plane managed to level off and miraculously landed on a snowy field. Moreover, the vehicle was used again for its original purpose after the repair.

With the availability of advanced security tools in modern times, it is highly unlikely that such a situation will happen again. After all, contemporary remote control military hardware is equipped with a self-destruction system. This was done to avoid a similar problem. Also, up-to-date drones are on standby mode and attempt to resume data transmission. If the operation fails, then the aircraft can make an effort to return to its base. As long as there is enough fuel available.
