The story of the infantry veteran Rob Reynolds and his work in Veterans Row

The documentary, released in 2024, drew attention of the public and authority representatives to Los Angeles veterans who, due to certain circumstances, face homelessness, hunger and hopelessness. The story of a man who walked this path, as well as the film “The Promised Land” as a call to action will be shared by layes.info, also paying attention to the description of Veterans Row.

What is Veterans Row?

This is a camp of free American veterans living outside the campus of West Los Angeles.

In general, the Veterans Affairs campus in West Los Angeles is one of the largest Virginia campuses in the country, covering 388 acres. Historically, the territory was initially transferred to the federal government. It was a donation of a wealthy secular person to accommodate veterans. It is hard to imagine, but once it was a fully functional town that had its own mail and transport system.

In the 1950s, about 500 veterans of the Second World War (and not only) lived on the territory, who could use healthcare services.

Modern Veterans Row

Predominantly, most of the land is not used. It is filled with dilapidated buildings. It bears little resemblance to the glorious days. On the territory, despite the national crisis, there are 233 veterans.

On the rest of the land there is the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center, the city’s National Cemetery and also several controversial tenants. For instance, for many years, the premises and territory were rented by companies that had nothing to do with veterans and Veterans Row. We are talking about the following companies:

•    Fox Studios, which used the territory to store film sets

•    UCLA, which built a baseball stadium on the ground

•    Marriott, which had laundry facilities for its hotels on the territory.

The absurdity of the situation was that at the same time, homeless veterans were not able to stay and live on the land that was reserved for them.

“The Promised Land”

The documentary film by the army veteran filmmaker Rebecca Murga titled “The Promised Land” tells about the homelessness of veterans and the failures of Veterans Row.

Rebecca Murga deserves special attention. She is a Latino writer from Chicago who is known for stories about her Puerto Rican roots and military experience. Initially, the woman began her career as a sports producer, but the events of September 11 were the impetus to join the army. Rebecca Murga became a public relations officer in the U.S. Army. She was deployed to Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan. She was awarded the Bronze Star for her service, as she became one of the first women in Navy SEALs and Special Forces. She also received the Medal for Merit for her service in Iraq.

After returning to the United States, the woman continued her production work. She defends the issues of veterans and women. One of her works “The Promised Land” brings to the forefront the issue of veterans’ homelessness.

The Struggle of Veterans

The film depicts the efforts of veterans, their disappointment due to the misuse of land donated in 1888 to disabled soldiers. Veterans experience a daily emotional and physical struggle. They believe they are abandoned by the system.

In 2015, there were attempts to settle the lawsuit and solve the issues of homelessness. However, 1200 promised housing units failed to be completed. Battles grew, as did despair among the veterans.

Rob Reynolds

The man was in the center of this struggle. From 2006 to 2010, he served in the 10th Mountain Division in Baghdad and took an active part in the civil conflict in Iraq. Rob Reynolds is an infantry veteran who, after returning to civilian life, began another struggle with addiction. The man struggled with substance abuse, after which he was sent to the Veterans Affairs campus in West Los Angeles. He was with a service animal, so he was not allowed to spend the night. As a result, the man, an infantry veteran, slept in the street.

Much has changed since then. He became the de facto Veterans Row manager. He actively helps other homeless veterans, who were caught in a tight spot. This assistance applies to work, home and privileges to receive help.

Rob Reynolds became one of those who supported Veterans Row in court. The director of the film, Rebecca Murga, said that she was sincerely passionate about caring for veterans from Rob Reynolds.

Rob Reynolds suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. He is 100% disabled, and works as an advocate for homeless veterans in Los Angeles. He is deeply saddened that more than 3,000 veterans are homeless in the city. These are data obtained by the Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2023. The department conducts a census of homeless people in the United States every year.

Los Angeles authorities should be alarmed by the fact that this figure is higher than any other metropolitan region of the United States. However, the number of 3,000 people is still indicative because there are homeless people (including veterans) who are out of sight. They can sleep in vehicles or parks and the like.

Thanks to the documentary film “The Promised Land”, veterans, including Rob Reynolds, were able to speak out. Interestingly, this is a part of seven stories that tell about the campus, land transactions and a Marine veteran who was left without housing and much more.

You need to write and talk about the story of the veterans of West Los Angeles because it is highly important.
